Hello,

I'm interested to know if it's possible to redirect specific inbound links to a website to another destination and have it appear to search engines that the link doesn't belong to the original target site.

We have a client who has a high number of inbound links coming from questionable websites that are completely unrelated to the target site.

It's more of a theory, but it seems reasonable to think that a person/company would have some degree of control of what links were coming to their site(s).

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.

Sorry, form this description it is hard to imagine what you are trying to perform. Could you provide an example?

Hi,

Here is an example;

Imagine you own a website that sells armchairs. Now imagine another person or persons were building inbound links to your website from undesirable websites such as porn sites.

If search engines see this, it's highly possible they will prevent this site from ranking for it's key terms because the "bad" inbound links are a red flag. I could be wrong, but it seems possible to sabotage someones SEO campaign by building "bad" inbound links to a competitors site.

This seems to have happened to one of my clients sites and I would like to know if there is a way to "negate" those bad links by redirecting them.

Well, it is possible to redirect such links to nowhere ;)
based on the referer. But there is no guarantee that it will help because search engines may ignore referers.

Here is the possible rule:

RewriteCond Host: (.*)
RewriteCond Referer: (?!https?\://\1/.*).+
RewriteRule .* http\://nowhere.org/ [I,R]
