Programmatically generating the .htaccess file

27 Apr 2012, 14:26

We used to use a database query to generate passwords for access to one virtual directory. It has worked fine since we were hosting our own site.

We are now moving our site off to a third party provider. I don't want to expose our database to the internet.

Can we generate the .htaccess file programatically? Is there a specific format? Password encryption?

We could then update the file on the server using ftp.

Thanks in advance

Hello, Kyle

Yes, it's possible to update the .htaccess programmatically.
It's important to observe permissions for the .htaccess file and correct syntax.
No password encryption is used. It's a plain text file.
