I am considering using ISAPI rewrite, currently my database cart generates a xml sitemap for google. It uses the standard urls www.root.com?catid=##&prodid=## after I apply rewrite will google crawl the standard urls, due to the site map, and then crawl the rewritten url in its normal crawling fashion giving google the impression of two different pages with identical content, perhaps invoking the duplicate content page penalty or SE rankings?

Is there an issue with spiders getting caught in a loop between the old url and the rewritten ones if there are hard coded old urls in the site?

Should I quit using the site map?

Does linkfreeze handle these issues better with its ability to rewrite internal links?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, google could penalyze your site for having duplicates.

Such loops are possible even without rewritten URIs, so this should not be a problem for spiders.

May be it would be better to convert  site map links to a static form?

I certainly would kill all hardcoded urls in the old format if I were you. Do you actually have a sitemap page with the new isapi aided format? if you do use this free tool to generate a sitemap, and do a find/replace/delete and replace the one your cart generates.

http://www.sitemapspal.com/

Besides, god only knows if they actually use that sitemap format they created, I have been using it since they came out with it, and I have not seen any changes in my site, or more efficitent crawling.

I also don't know what cart you use or if you could change, but with the aide of isapi, I have built some sweet comersus carts that kick butt for search engines.
